Shakotan Soran Mikaku Festival - June 24, 2018

The Shakotan Soran Mikaku Festival is an annual event that usually takes place on the last Sunday of June. This year, this festival will be held on the 24th of June.

What makes Shakotan an interesting event to take part in is its popularity for fresh sea urchins and other seafood that are served around the area, and the performances done during the day. There will also be a fireworks display in the evening. Its goal is to welcome the arrival of summer and showcase fresh seafood in Niseko. If you are planning to join this event, our tip for you is to make sure you arrive early so you can try the delicious seafood soup that is made in a huge, 150cm pot.

ACTIVITIES

Fishing Tour

The island of Hokkaido is popular for having the best and most amazingly delicious variety of fish and other seafood. Most of the seafood that are served in restaurants are caught fresh from their pristine rivers. This summer, guests who travel to Niseko are welcome to join fishing tours so they can experience how the local fishermen fish in the rivers and lakes of Niseko.

Biking Tour

I Ksb M6 Xs X3

One of the best ways to explore Niseko on both spring and summer seasons is by renting a bike and going around the area to check out all the scenic as well as undiscovered spots. With this activity, you can choose to go solo and discover places on your own or go with a group or a guide on a biking tour.

When it comes to bike rentals and guided tour, we highly recommend you to check out Rhythm Japan.

Hiking and Trekking

Hiking

What better way to discover the beautiful, hidden spots in Niseko than going for a hike or a trek in its mountains? You can start in the morning before the sun rises and walk up Mt. Yotei or Mt. Annupuri.

You have several options when you climb Mt. Annupuri.
1. The Hirafu course -- you can start from the Grand Hirafu summer gondola.
2. The Goshiki Onsen course -- this takes about 1 hr. 40 min. to the summit and you can go back down on the Hirafu side using the summer gondola.
3. The Annupuri course -- you can start from the Niseko Annupuri gondola.

Any one of these three courses would be a relatively easy fun climbing.

For Mt. Yotei, there are three trailheads to the top in these surrounding towns --Kutchan, Makkari and Kimobetsu.

From the Makkari trailhead, it will take five hours to climb up to the top, and another four to go down. If you would like to walk around the volcanic crater, you will also need another two hours.

What makes this activity the best thing to do this summer is the fact that the summit flowers are in full bloom, and you’ll see a lot of birds and beautiful clouds surrounding the peak of the mountains!

Paddling/Standup Paddlebarding

If you're more into water sports this summer, you can definitely try SUP or Standup Paddleboarding in Niseko. You can sign up and take part in Rhythm Japan's SUP tour to Lake Toya which is a large caldera lake to the south of Niseko. This lake is considered to be the second most transparent in Japan!

If you're planning to take a trip to Niseko and join these exciting activities, check out our rooms and book your accommodation now! We partnered with Rhythm Japan to offer you a 4-night stay (for the price of three) plus one-day guided tour and bike rental with Rhythm.

Golf Season Kicks Off in Niseko 2018

May 11, 2018
Golf Niseko

Last Sunday, 6th May, was officially the last day of the ski season here in Niseko area including Niseko Grand Hirafu, Niseko Annupuri and Niseko Village. Now that the ski season has come to a close and it's time to put away the skis and snowboarding gear, it is also the right time to take your golf clubs out.

Besides being popular for skiing during the winter, Niseko has also proven itself to be one of the most spectacular places for golfing during the green season. Niseko houses three world-class golf courses which include:

The Niseko Golf Course

Open until November 4. This course, designed by Arnold Palmer, offers a beautiful layout that runs through the forest and is surrounded by pine trees and white birches. It is 15 minutes away from Niseko Hirafu and is one of the most difficult and strategic courses in the entire Hokkaido.

The Niseko Village Golf Course

This course is open from May 1 to October 21. It is considered to have one of the best views of Mt. Yotei, and if you're a beginner and you want to be surrounded by beautiful white birches and nature in general as you play, this course is the best for you. Also, we consider the fact that this par 73, 6,845 yard course has won the prize for Japan's Best Golf Course two years in a row back in 2014-2015, beating Tokyo Golf Club and Kawana Resort's coast-side Fuji course.

Hanazono Golf Course

It is open from May 3 until November 4, 2018. This par 72 course is recognized as one of the most attractive golf courses in the entire country. It was rebranded in 2016 to match the Hanazono ski resort that forms one of the four ski resorts on Niseko United.

What makes this course very special is its unique layout that is located in the middle of the picturesque Niseko scenery and boasts the magnificent view of Mt. Yotei. Moreover, this course features a range of challenging holes.

Take a quick look via the video below of this fantastic course.

Golden Week in Niseko

Apr 30, 2018

Golden Week is a collection of four national holidays within seven days. In combination with well-placed weekends, the Golden Week becomes one of Japan's three busiest holiday seasons, besides New Year and the Obon week.

What Holidays make up Golden Week?

  • April 29
    Showa Day (Showa no hi):
April 29 is the birthday of former Emperor Showa who died in the year 1989. Until 2006, Greenery Day (see May 4) used to be celebrated on this day.
  • May 3
    Constitution Day (Kenpo kinenbi):
On this day in 1947, the new postwar constitution was put into effect.
  • May 4
    Greenery Day (Midori no hi):
Until 2006, Greenery Day used to be celebrated on April 29 -- the birthday of former Emperor Showa. The day is dedicated to the environment mainly because the emperor loved plants and nature. Before being declared Greenery Day, May 4 used to be a national holiday due to a law which declares a day that falls between two national holidays, a national holiday.
  • May 5
    Children's Day (Kodomo no hi):
The Boy's Festival (Tango no Sekku) is celebrated on this day. Families pray for the health and future success of their sons by hanging up carp streamers and displaying samurai dolls, both symbolizing strength, power and success in life. The Girl's Festival is celebrated on March 3.

If visiting Niseko during Golden Week, you will arrive just as the sakura (cherry blossom) will arrive in Hokkaido! The days are getting longer and as the last of the snow melts away, you will still have a chance to ski during the final days of the season. Dining options are still plentiful in and around Niseko, hence we came up with this list of recommended restaurants at the Odin Place:

The Alpinist (Bookings available from 6pm - 830pm)

On offer is a set menu for 5000 JPY per person which includes:

1. Welcome glass of wine

2. French Onion Soup

3. Cheese Fondue or Raclette

4. Assorted French Crepe

5. Tea and Coffee

Both Musu and Koko will also open up until the 6th of May.

Musu - Open Sunday to Thursday - 8am till 6pm (4pm last order) and Friday & Saturday 8am till 1030pm (9pm last order)

Koko - Open everyday 7am till 4 pm
